Do You Live in Overwhelm or Excitement?

th

Or in between?

I see it all the time in my clients and it’s something I’ve had to work on in myself.  There’s this excitement of knowing exactly what you want and seeing it so clearly in your mind and then bam!  The overwhelm hits.

Then you start living in the in between.  Feeling like you want your dream so badly that you can taste it, but your mind is thinking something will go wrong and it’s just way too much to handle.

So you start creating excuses like you have to much on your plate to focus on it, you don’t have the time, and you’ll have more money later.

As a friend and a fellow sufferer of overwhelm, I want to tell you these are all lies.

Not that you were living with some crazy person in your head who wants you to fail, it’s just that you’re not focusing on the right things.

How do you know you’re doing it?  Here’s a fool-proof way of seeing whether you’re living in excitement or overwhelm:

You identify your dream, get excited for about five minutes.  Then start generating lists of why it can’t happen.

The excuse list looks like this:

“It’s not the right time because I have too much on my plate at work.”

“Getting to that high of a level in my life or career takes a lot of big steps that I can’t accomplish right now.”

“Giving myself a time frame and some structure to get it done means I’ll have less time to enjoy myself and my family, so I’ll put it off for when I have more time.”

“I don’t have the money but magically, I believe the money will appear at a later date so I’ll wait for that.”

Do you see how quickly you can go from excitement to overwhelm?

There are three key ways to get exactly what you want:

1. Allow yourself to stay in excitement and surround yourself by people and things that keep you in that place.

2. Create a schedule for yourself.  I know this schedule feels like the opposite of excitement, but the truth is you have more time for excitement if you schedule in doing the things that will get you to your dream.  Ernest Hemingway said that his number one key to being successful in writing was having a schedule.  He might have been in the bar partying all night but he dedicated 6am ’til 9am every morning to write.

3. Stop letting money dictate your excitement level.  I’m not saying go crazy with your money, I’m saying if you’re excited about something find a way that it can work.  Commit to look at your finances in a way that they become your friend, not your dream killer.

Then ask yourself, what are you really here for?  You’re here to be excited and sometimes living in that excitement takes some work.  But it’s worth it.  Because living in excitement means you’re staying true to yourself and you’re not letting worry and rules dictate your life.

And guess what?  Excitement gets stuff done!  Overwhelm will be a thing of the past because now you are in control of your mind, body, and soul!  Nothing feels better than that.

I love this article Laura . . . the three keys to getting what you want is great. Especially with #1 and 3. #2 is hard in that there can be a lot to do, a lot of different aspects to the path . . . how do you make time for it all . . . but then I realize that old familiar belief “I don’t have enough time” is broadcasting and I tell myself that I do have time, right here, right now, for a turtle step.

I find it hard to surround myself with people that keep me in the excitement – that is a huge challenge given that most people are wrapped up in their socially acceptable believes.

Thanks for your feedback Melisa! I would say to you, challenge the belief that it’s hard to surround yourself with people who keep you in excitement. There are people all around you who are ready to revel in your excitement and be positive with you. Don’t give up on finding them, just set the intention and they will appear.
