Listen, are you breathing just a little and calling it a life? ~Mary Oliver

That quote from Mary Oliver really got me thinking. I often talk to my clients about the importance of breathing but I’m not always sure if they fully understand the importance of it.

For a long time I didn’t either. I would do a short meditation and take quick deep breaths if I felt stress but I really wasn’t consciously aware of how I was breathing. It was actually through the process of being in pain that I became aware of the lack of air I was [...]
More

When I first became a coach I worked with people who were stressed about their career. When I coach people who are dealing with a lot of stress I ask them to go into their bodies and notice where they feel stress or tension. I typically get one of two responses; either “can’t find anything”or they find aches and pains that they never knew were there. They often want to run back into their minds and discuss all of their life stresses.

I simply told them for one week try stopping once a day and notice what you are thinking [...]
More

I’ve been there too. I spent many years living with IBS and I know how it can impact all parts of your life from career to relationships. I also know how the stress around IBS symptoms can rule your life. It’s understandable… it’s hard to try new things when you are fearful about having a flare-up. But you don’t have to limit your life, there is something you can do about it.

In my free e-book, “IBS Manifesto: Creating Less Stress and More Freedom While Living With IBS “, I discuss 5 tools to help you start living a more [...]
More

I was tempted to name this “attack of the killer bees”. Then I thought that might be too dramatic. As a child when there were bees buzzing around it did feel like attack of the killer bees. Feeling threatened I would always swat or do some other kind of frantic movement that just left me with not one, but usually many bee stings.

I felt threatened so I went into self-protection mode. The problem was my reaction intensified their reaction and the end result was never in my favor. I love metaphors so instantly I began to think of the [...]
More

I used to be a big time worrier. I would worry about everything: big, small or miniscule. From saying the “wrong” thing to the supermarket clerk to getting in trouble for some future mistake I hadn’t even made yet.

Worry consumed my mind most of the time. It was the biggest distraction I used to avoid my feelings and being in the present moment.

It disrupted my thoughts, goals, sleep, and conversations. I was always looking for assurance from others that my worries were not warranted.

It took a lot of practice and concentrated effort for me to beat it.

And it still [...]
More

It’s been a rough week, possibly even a rough month. Some clients claim it’s been a rough few years! I’m not about to debate what constitutes rough, but I will say there are a whole bunch of people out there under a whole lot of stress. Some days there is no way around it, but there is always a way to handle it.

Ugh, another thing for my to do list. Maybe. The problem is that if you don’t deal with it, it accumulates in your body and that’s how a rough day can turn into a rough year. There’s [...]
More
