Just because a lot of people say it doesn’t mean it’s true.

I used to spend a lot of time asking people their opinions on things. I needed to know what I was doing was right, what I was saying was correct and if what other people thought about me was true. I was seeking out other peoples opinion because I thought somehow they knew more than me. In the end I really realized I was seeking out their approval.

What a horrible waste of time! Not to mention a great way to sabotage my already low self-esteem.

The kicker was when I would believe [...]
More

Some days are better than others, even for a life coach.A couple of months ago I was in a funk getting frustrated doing some work on the computer that I really didn’t want to do.I tried all my usual tactics like a timer, reminding myself it was just temporary, and doing some reading. But the fact was I just really did not want to be doing that type of work, especially at that moment. It was a few days before a millennial birthday and I’d had a lot of personal things going on. As the frustration mounted and I told [...]
More

“I watch her with loving sadness as she dulls her shine to please others. Will this butterfly ever soar? Will she continue to pretend she can’t fly? Her greatest life awaits this decision.” – Steve Maraboli

This quote really got me thinking this week. SO many women I work with are caught up in the act of people pleasing. I used to do the same thing even though I would never have considered myself a people pleaser.

I met with a new client this week. Though she was new to me, her story was a familiar one that I had heard from many clients. She came to me regarding a lack of confidence in the workplace. She wanted to be more assertive and play a bigger role, but was crippled by feelings of indecision and self-doubt. When I asked her why she didn’t assert herself more in the workplace she said she simply didn’t know enough. In my work with clients I have found that this is not true 99% of the time.

When I asked about [...]
More

In my daily search for interesting opinions there was one article that really stood out to me this week. It was entitled “Visualize Failure” by Peter Bregman of the Harvard Business Review. It caught my eye because an article promoting failure is the last thing you would expect from a school that has educated some of the most successful people in the world. Even the idea itself of expecting failure seems so contrary to everything we learn from childhood to adulthood. However, in it’s simplicity it makes perfect complete sense.

In the article Bregman is discussing a kayaking trip in [...]
More

Clients often come to me looking for the perfect career and are looking for an exact blueprint that will send them in the right direction immediately. I definitely have tools to get you started on your search, but the most important thing you can do is to start looking at the beliefs you have about your circumstances. It can be difficult to look at ourselves with this kind of honesty, but you find some surprising things about what may be affecting your search for the “perfect job”. I recently found [...]
More

It is not news to anyone that the climate of the workplace has shifted dramatically over the last year or so. My clients often tell me that they fear losing their jobs and will do anything required of them to secure their positions. Other clients come to me frustrated with longer hours and more demands and feel powerless. To many it feels like a choice less world right now. Allowing yourself to be powerless in your world is not going to help you progress or succeed in an ever changing workplace. The key is to learn resilience with change and [...]
More

Being confident and resilient are the best qualities you can possess in the current job market. For some people these qualities seem to come naturally, as if they were born knowing who they are and what they have to offer the workplace and world. How do they do it? Can I do it? These are the questions I hear often from clients. They do it naturally and so can you. Being confident and resilient can be learned skills.
